Welcome back to a new school year here at Southside Community School! We are so excited to start teaching your students again. There have been a few changes this year that we want to make sure you are aware of.
School begins at 8:30 on Thursday, August 5th. We dismiss at 2:45. The After School Program will be available until 5:00 this year, starting August 5th.
Online Learning
Online learning is currently not an option for students. Our priority is to keep students on campus this year. Right now, cases in the county are low. We are not planning on offering online learning as an option unless cases spike again in Pima County. If cases do rise, the Board may approve the option of online learning again for parents who are interested.
Masking
The Arizona State Legislature passed a bill at the beginning of July prohibiting schools from requiring students or staff to be masked while on campus. Although we highly recommend masking for unvaccinated students, we do not require it.
Uniforms
Parents and families voted for Southside to require uniforms for students during the 2019-2020 school year. We were not able to implement this last year due to COVID. Starting on September 6th, all students will be required to wear either a school shirt or a black collared shirt Mondays-Thursdays. School shirts are on sale in the front office for $5 each. Get one soon to beat the rush!
Staffing Changes
As many of you know, our 1st grade teacher, Leticia Moreno, retired at the end of last year. She will be replaced by Mr. Julian Cardenas, who has already worked at Southside for several years. Mrs. Cheryl Perry is going to be our new STEM teacher and Health Coordinator. Ms. Jenai Crump will be taking her place in JH Science. We also have some new staff on board. Ms. Karina Acuna will be our new After School Program Director, Mr. Steven Cates will be our Interventionist and tutors, and Ms. Laura Sanudo will be our new 4th grade teacher’s aide.
